Adriatic Sea (Ἀδρίας, Adrias). Also, Sea of Adria. An arm of the Mediterranean between Italy and Greece. Paul endured a shipwreck on the Adriatic (Acts 27:27).
The Adriatic Sea is named after the Etruscan city Adria, which was at the mouth of the Po River (Livy, Hist. 5.33.7; Strabo, Geography 5.214). At first the name only applied to the northern part of the sea. Later, it came to include the sea further south, including the Ionian Sea (e.g., Strabo, Geography 2.5.20). Thus, for many in the ancient world the size of the sea was larger than the Adriatic Sea we know today. This would explain why the ship carrying Paul and his military escort could land at Malta after being driven across it (Acts 27:27). Similarly, Josephus writes that he was shipwrecked in the Adriatic Sea and was rescued by a ship sailing from Cyrene to Puteoli (Life 3).
