Aspects of God’s Presence
In the Old Testament, “glory” can refer to God’s revelation of Himself to people. Fretheim has sketched a spectrum illustrating the complexity of God’s divine presence (Fretheim, Suffering of God, 60–65). It includes:
• His general presence in the world
• His “accompanying presence” (Fretheim, Suffering of God, 61)
• His “tabernacling” presence (Fretheim, Suffering of God, 61)
• His presence in theophanies or visible appearances
The continuum is marked by intensification of divine presence from lesser to greater. Glory features in three of these modes. Beyond this continuum, God’s glory or presence can also be outside the world, “above the heavens” (Psa 113:4; compare 1 Kgs 8:27).
