Hamoukar
Large-scale warfare appears in the archaeological record in the fourth millennium bc at Hamoukar in Syria. Excavators at Hamoukar found large-scale destruction and collapsed walls that had crumbled after being bombarded by clay sling bullets of various sizes. Hamoukar represents the first example of fortifications that were destroyed by a large, organized military force. As such, it is generally considered the earliest example of an urban center that needed to fortify itself against large-scale military aggression.
