Devil in Second Temple Literature
In the Second Temple period, the Devil moved from being an adversarial prosecutor in the heavenly court to the personification of all evil. This shift may have arisen due to the apocalyptic fervor to solve the problem of God’s goodness and the presence of evil with God’s people. In this period, the Devil becomes the great adversary of God and His people. Wisdom of Solomon indicates, “through the devil’s envy death entered the world …” (Wisdom 2:24). Perhaps the earliest account of the origin and fall of Satan comes from the Life of Adam and Eve, written toward the end of the first century ad (compare 2 En. 29.4; 31.3).
