Death of Stephen

The events surrounding the death of Stephen (Acts 7) are tentatively dated to the ad 30s. If Jesus was crucified in ad 30, Stephen’s death may have occurred as early as ad 31/32 (Riesner, Chronology, 59–63) or “somewhere between 32 and 34” (Hengel, Studies, 11–12). However, under a later crucifixion date of ad 33, Stephen’s death is dated later—“perhaps a year after the day of Pentecost” (Barnett, Rise, 215)—circa ad 34.
