Mina/Maneh: מָנֶה (maneh)

The mina or maneh (“to count” or “to number”) is equivalent to 50 shekels according to Israelite metrology. However, Ezekiel (demonstrating Babylonian influence) states that one mina is equal to 60 shekels or 20 ounces (Ezek 45:12; Sternberg, “Weights and Measures,” 704). It is used only once in the preexilic era in reference to Solomon’s shields (1 Kgs 10:17) but appears more frequently in the postexilic texts (Ezra 2:69; Neh 7:71, 72), suggesting that the term may have been reserved for special circumstances (Sternberg, “Weights and Measures,” 704).
