Overview
Atonement signifies the means by which the sins of individuals and of humanity in general are “paid for” or “erased.” The New Testament metaphors for Christ’s death as sacrifice, ransom, etc., provide the foundation for the idea that Christ serves as a substitution for sinners in atoning for their sins. The way these metaphors are understood in relation to Christ’s saving work has led to various theories of substitutionary atonement.
