God’s Promises
In the Old Testament, a sign can also refer to God’s promises—especially when connected to His covenant promises. Examples of signs referring to promises include:
• The rainbow was a sign of God’s covenant with Noah (Gen 9:11–16).
• Circumcision was a sign of God’s covenant with Abraham (Gen 17:9–14).
• The Sabbath is a sign of God’s promise of sanctification (Exod 31:13).
• God placed a sign on Cain promising to avenge his death should anyone kill him (Gen 4:15; The ESV, NIV, NET translate אוֹח, och; as “mark,” but NASB and ASV use “sign”).
