The Seleucid Period Ends (142 bc)
Simon Maccabeus (142–134 bc) expelled the Syrian military from Jerusalem and won complete freedom for Jerusalem. He successfully persuaded the Syrians to concede freedom of taxation to the Jews (142 bc) and minted his own Jewish coins. Although the Syrians still claimed Palestine as one of their territories, the Jews had gained their independence (1 Macc 13:41–42), which lasted until Roman intervention in 63 bc. From ca. 142 bc to 63 bc, descendants of the Maccabees, the Hasmonean Dynasty, were the high priests and rulers of Palestine.
