Sixteenth-century Spanish theologian Benedictus Arias Montanus suggested that the name Peru is derived from the name Ophir. He further reasoned that native Peruvians are descendants of Shem by way of Joktan (Ophir’s father) and Ophir. Montanus similarly asserted that the province of Yucatán is inspired by the name Joktan. The region, like southeastern Africa and India, Pakistan, and the Far East, is noted for its gold and the other gifts.
