The Baal Cycle. The Baal Cycle describes how the warrior god Baal came to lead the Canaanite pantheon by defeating Yam, the deified sea. In this account, Yam sends an ambassador to the assembly of the gods demanding that his lordship be acknowledged and that Baal be given over to him. The patriarch deity El concedes to Yam’s demands (CTA 2.1.36−37; Cross, Canaanite, 114). Baal, however, refuses to surrender to Yam and defeats him in battle using two clubs fashioned by Kotar (CTA 2.4.7−13; Cross, Canaanite, 114−15). El and the other gods of the divine assembly then acknowledge Baal’s status as the king of the Canaanite pantheon and order that a temple be built for him (Cross, Canaanite, 116; G. Smith, “Concept of God,” 25–26). The Baal cycle shares many themes with Enuma Elish as well as Phoenician traditions (Cross, Canaanite, 112−13).
