Biblical Relevance
The Jewish War (J.W.) provides a wealth of historical material from the era of the Maccabees (ca. 170 bc) through the Jewish revolt against Rome (66–70 ad) and its aftermath, much of it unparalleled in other ancient sources. An extensive section on Herod the Great and the Herodian dynasty (esp. Jewish War 1–2) illuminates the biblical accounts of their political dealings and family relationships. It also describes rulers such as Pilate (Jewish War 2.169–177), Felix and Festus (Jewish War 2.247–71; Acts 23–25); and high priests including Annas (Jewish War 2.240 [Ananus]; Luke 3:2; John 18:13, 24; Acts 4:6). J.W. also gives descriptions of the Pharisees, Sadducees and Essenes (e.g., 2.119–166), including their customs and beliefs.
