Amphictyony (ἀμφικτυονία, amphiktyonia). A term meaning “a gathering of neighbors.” A coalition of minor political entities gathered by common religious identity into a semiunified whole. The term originally applied to Greek and Italic leagues from the Hellenistic to Roman periods. In the mid-twentieth century, biblical scholars (following Martin Noth) applied the concept of the amphictyony to the loose political organization of the 12 tribes of Israel during the period of the judges. This analogy has been largely abandoned in contemporary biblical scholarship.
