Biblical Relevance and Possible Identification
Although the site has been identified with a fort named Malatha/Moleatha of the Roman-Byzantine period, the biblical identification of Tel Malhata is uncertain. Several biblical sites have been proposed: Moladah (Josh 15:26), Hormah (Num 14:45), Baalath-Beer (Josh 19:8), Bealoth (Josh 15:24), Telaim (1 Sam 15:4), or possibly the Canaanite city of Arad. Despite the uncertainty of Tel Malhata’s identity, the evidence suggests that the most likely candidate is among Simeon’s inheritance (Josh 19:1–9; Kochavi, “Tel Malhata,” 593–96).
