Arvad (אַרְוָד, arwad). A Phoenician island city off the coast of Syria about 31 miles north of Tripolis. Arvad’s inhabitants are mentioned in the Bible as a tribe of Canaanites (Gen 10:18; 1 Chr 1:16). Ezekiel 27:8–11 refers to its sailors and soldiers, saying they were in the service of Tyre. Arvad is mentioned in 1 Macc 15:16–23 (138 bc) where the Roman consul Lucius writes to several countries (including Arvad, which is called “Arvadus” in v. 23) on behalf of the Jews living there. The town is not mentioned in the New Testament.
