Amariah, Son of Azariah (אֲמַרְיָה, amaryah). A priest listed in the priestly genealogy of 1 Chr 6:1–15 and in the genealogy of Ezra in Ezra 7:1–5 (1 Chr 6:11; Ezra 7:3). Amariah was the son of Azariah and father of Ahitub. According to 2 Chr 19:11, Amariah was the chief priest during the reign of Jehoshaphat.
The priestly genealogy in 1 Chr 6 includes two individuals named Amariah and three named Azariah. The sequence—Amariah, Ahitub, Zadok—occurs twice in 1 Chr 6:1–15. Ezra’s genealogy skips over six names between Azariah, son of Johanan, and Meraioth, son of Zerahiah, including the earlier sequence of the names Amariah, Ahitub, and Zadok. The omission was likely a copying error caused by the repetition of the names. The earlier Amariah was the grandfather of Zadok, the high priest under King David.
