When it’s being used as a conjunction, those two things are right next to each other. When καί is used adverbially, it’s still signaling the close connection, but the only difference is, those two things are not right next to each other. So, if we look at the first few verses of Romans, we have, “Having been declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God.” And [in] the second part of verse 2b, you have, “And we boast in the hope of glory.” So we have this idea of boasting that’s added to this
