The word comes from a root meaning “mountain.” It expresses the idea “God of mountains”; that is, one seated above all human authority. God appeared to each of the Patriarchs and identified Himself to them by this Name (Gen. 17:1; 28:3–4; 35:11; Ex. 6:3). Thus, the Promises made in each context are guaranteed by God’s Power and overarching authority.
