INTRODUCTION In this introduction, I propose to differentiate among those involved in the polemic on the basis of their explicit statements concerning the state and religion, as well as their treatment of sacrifices and the daemons. I will show that the pagans’ religiosity was centered upon their political-social needs, whereas that of the Christians gave preference to the demands of their creed. In addition, I will point out mutual influences which can be traced in unexpected declarations borrowed
