The Ruling Authorities (2:13–17)* Teaching about the Christian and the state is not too plentiful in the New Testament. It is basically confined to Mark 12:14–17 (and parallels), Romans 13:1–7; 1 Timothy 2:1–3; Titus 3:1–3 and the present passage. In the epistles the teaching is repeatedly about the necessity to submit to the state authorities, whose task is to preserve law and order. Christians are to show themselves as model citizens by not going against the law but rather doing what will commend
