any length the subsequent developments in early Christian faith. Across the decades and first few centuries after the date of the texts that we have looked at here, there certainly were further developments. Indeed, there was considerable diversity, and there were sharp controversies as well, over how best to express Jesus’ significance, and even over who the God was with whom Jesus was to be linked.47 On the latter issue, the most popular position, and the one that became the “orthodox” view, was
