This phrase reminds me of one of the illustrations I used to open this book—the story of Hetty Green who inherited millions and yet lived like a pauper. She is one of many famous misers. They are known for having access to great wealth, but instead of using it to benefit themselves and their families, they live in substandard conditions. Instead of knowing the wealth of their inheritance, they fear that they will loose their riches and therefore hoard it irrationally.
