But there is something further to be considered in connection with these and comparable statements in the Gospel of John: it is not said that the Father has given everyone to Jesus and it is not said that everyone will come to him. Rather, the Evangelist knows about the deep mystery touching the message of Jesus: no matter how persuasively and scintillatingly it is presented, it still seizes some while leaving others cold. For the one it is the word of God; for the other, it is
