Prominence is fundamentally about making something stand out in its context. The primary means of making something stand out is by contrasting it with other things in the context. Contrast, in turn, presupposes that a person recognizes the underlying pattern. Even in contexts where we cannot verbalize a pattern, we can still perceive contrast. I do not need a music theory class to pick out a refrain or chorus; I do not need an art class to pick out the center of interest in most paintings. We constantly
