I. HEBREW SYLLABLES There are two types of syllables in Hebrew—open and closed • Open Syllables: End with a vowel (Cv). Examples: אֱ תָּ יְ וְ כִּי בְּ If there is a quiescent letter (א, ה, ו, and י) at the end of a syllable, then the word is still considered open (e.g., בּוֹא bȏʾ “to come, go”) since the vowel still ends the syllable. • Closed Syllables: End with a consonant (CvC). The vowel can never be only a shewa. Examples: אָב אֵל בֶּן בַּר Every consonant
