Though traditionally translated “faith” here on the basis of the New Testament use of the passage, the term is better rendered “integrity,” “faithfulness,” or “allegiance.” The primary meaning of the term is “firmness, steadiness” (see Exod. 17:12). When used of human character and conduct, it refers to reliability (see Prov. 12:17, 22; Isa. 59:4; Jer. 5:3; 9:3) and integrity (see 2 Kings 12:15; 22:7; Jer. 5:1).
