Indeed, it is the raising of Lazarus that triggers the discussion in the Sanhedrin that leads to the decision that Jesus must be put to death for the nation (11:49–52). Not only does Jesus bring Lazarus to life at the cost of his own death, but Lazarus has not thereby escaped the threat of death.
