ventured the idea that “the mighty king” was El Elyon in Genesis 14, but Driver did not accept this. Hommel thought the mighty king must have been the king of the Hethithes and not the Pharaoh. It is most likely that there was an “expanded recension” of Genesis 14 with the information that Melchizedek did not receive his kingship from his father and mother. Presumably this addition stood originally in v 18 of Genesis 14. The modern commentaries do not mention this discussion.44 Only the old commentary
