In contrast to צֶלֶם, the meaning of דְּמוּת is transparent. It is obviously related to the verb דָּמָה, “be like, resemble.”30 The OT uses the noun to describe a thing’s being similar to something else.31 For example, Psalm 58:4 declares that the venom of the wicked is “according to the likeness of” (כִּדְמוּת), or “similar to,” the venom of a serpent. Thus it seems that the second descriptor of man in Genesis 1:26, דְּמוּת, helps clarify somewhat the meaning of the first, צֶלֶם. What does it mean
