The discovery of manuscripts of Daniel at Qumran dating from the Maccabean period renders it highly improbable that the book was composed during the time of the Maccabees. In Apercus preliminaires Dupont-Sommer reports that “The owners of seventeen different fragments of Daniel are known, but there are certainly several others.”2 This evidence demonstrates the popularity of Daniel with the Qumran Covenanteers.
