They are the active and visible manifestation of God’s gracious charthrough the person of Jesus. John seems eager to reserve the term for Jesus and his works and life. There are no stories in John about rival acter at work for the salvation of the world. Finally, signs are done exorcists, and no warnings of false messiahs who will come with signs and wonders. Even the disciples are promised that they will do “greater works,” not greater signs (14:12). A sign is a manifestation, through the person
