The term “digraph” comes from the Greek δυ- (“two”) and γραφ- (“write”). It refers to letters, written symbols, that are combined to represent various sounds. Examples of English digraphs are: ai, ea, ou (these all have their pronunciations), ow, oo, ou. They all are digraphs; they all have two symbols, though.
