They recognize him when he speaks because they are already acquainted with his character. The Gospel of John, which includes this saying of Jesus, illustrates this point with various examples. Nathanael, undoubtedly a student of Scripture (1:45–46), recognized the Lord he already served when the Lord confronted him (1:49).
