WE have carried our respect for antiquity so far today, in matters in which it should have less influence, that we treat all its ideas as revelations and even its obscurities as mysteries; we can no longer advance new opinions without danger, and an author’s text is enough to destroy the strongest arguments … Not that my intention is to correct one vice by another, and to have no esteem for the ancients because they are too much esteemed.
