the land was subdued before them Seems to conflict with earlier statements about pockets of Canaanite resistance in the promised land (see 15:63; 16:10; 17:12).
18:3 How long will you be slack about going to take possession of the land that Yahweh, the God of your ancestors, has given you? Probably refers to negligence in surveying the land, not a judgment of military failure.
18:4 write a description of it Joshua orders the people to record geographical features useful for marking inheritance boundaries.
18:5 They will divide it among themselves into seven portions For the remaining tribes.
