41:1 Leviathan May refer to a crocodile or a mythical sea monster. God describes the Leviathan as a mighty and fearsome creature (Job 41:12–34). This powerful creature, however, is subject to God like a pet (vv. 3–5).

Biblical references to Leviathan are often symbolic references for chaos itself (3:8; 7:12; 9:13; compare Isa 27:1 and note). However, since God has described many aspects of His creation, it is best to view the reference to Leviathan—like Behemoth—as a part of His creation.

41:10 is he who would stand before it God asks how Job can stand before Him if he is unable to stand before Leviathan. Job’s boldness in bringing a case before God is as foolish as inciting Leviathan.

41:12–34 The remainder of God’s speech is a poetic description of Leviathan. God describes its great strength (Job 41:12), fearsome teeth (v. 14), impenetrable skin (vv. 15–17, 23), and fiery breath (vv. 19–21). Weapons are useless against it (vv. 26–29). Just as no one is able to subdue this creature (vv. 33–34), no one can challenge the rule of Yahweh.
