43:1–13 Just as Jeremiah predicted (42:21), the people do not listen to him. They accuse him of lying in order to persuade them to wait around for punishment from Babylon. They also implicate Baruch in their conspiracy theory. Even though Jeremiah’s prophecies about Babylon had proven true, here he is accused of false prophecy. He and Baruch perhaps were distrusted because of their pro-Babylonian and anti-Egyptian politics.

43:12 and take them captive A nation’s gods could be taken into exile by a conqueror. The carved image usually was placed in the temple of the conquering deity, symbolizing the defeated god’s inferiority.

43:13 the stone pillars of Heliopolis See note on Ezek 30:17. The four-sided pillars known as obelisks were common monuments in ancient Egypt.

he will burn the temples of the gods of Egypt with fire Just as the Jerusalem temple was burned, so too will the temples of Egypt burn.
