20:1–3 In the Samuel account, the battles against Ammon are broken up by the story of David’s sin with Bathsheba (2 Sam 11–12), which 1–2 Chronicles omits. That episode in David’s life would have been well-known to the Chronicler and his audience; however, this book focuses on themes of faithfulness to Yahweh, national unity, and proper temple worship (see note on 1 Chr 1:1–9:44).

20:5 the brother of Goliath The account in Samuel says that Elhanan killed Goliath himself (see 2 Sam 21:19 and note), conflicting with the account of young David killing Goliath (1 Sam 17).
