25 The remainder of the day was chaotic: a mixture of pitying stares, curious children, and unanswered questions. When nightfall arrived, Fanny was pleased for the cover of darkness that could hide her tears. There had been little time to think on her situation, but now that the family had picnicked, searched for treasure, and watched the fireworks, there would be ample time.
