Jesus first laid claim to one of Simon’s possessions by getting into his boat and teaching the people from it. He then put a claim on Simon’s time by asking him to get into the boat with him and row out from the shore. This was no small thing. Simon had to be weary and frazzled from fishing all night and earnestly yearning to find home and bed. While these claims put Simon to the test, the greatest was yet to come—Jesus staking his claim on Simon’s mind by telling him to let down his nets for a catch.
