Many commentators traditionally dated Joel as pre-exilic on the basis of the book’s place among the Minor Prophets in the Hebrew canon (between Hosea and Amos). Although the book itself provides no overt dating, Keil places Joel in the first part of the reign of Joash in Judah (ca. 837–807 B.C.), and Stuart writes of the probability that Joel is pre-exilic. They adduce the following reasons: 1. Keil assumes that Amos and Isaiah quote from the Book of Joel.
