The nature of temptations. The Greek word for temptation is peirasmos, a word also translated by “test” or “trial.” The International Encyclopedia of Bible Words (p. 593) notes that “a temptation is a difficult situation, a pressure that brings a reaction through which the character or commitment of the believer is demonstrated.” The temptation to turn stones to bread (Matt. 4:1–4; Luke 4:1–4).
