Christ. When the disciple Stephen speaks of Israel before the Sanhedrin, he calls the Hebrews ‘the ekklesia in the wilderness’ (Acts 7:38). That Greek term, often translated as ‘congregation’, is the basic New Testament word for ‘church’ (see Matt. 16:18; Acts 20:28). And, vice versa, when the New Testament speaks of the church it sometimes employs language that was reserved for the people of Israel. 1 Peter 2:9, for example, exclaims to the church: ‘But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood,
