“favor,” חֵן (ḥēn). The LXX attaches the first two words of v. 4—וּמְצָא־חֵן (ûmeṣāʾ-ḥēn, “Then you will win favor”)—to v. 3 and then reads v. 4 as “and devise excellent things in the sight of the LORD and of men” (cf. Rom 12:17; 2 Cor 8:21). The Targum and the Peshitta list the words separately—”favor and good and understanding.” Toy (p. 58) suggests changing the word שֵׂכֶל (śēḵel) to שֵׁם (šēm, “name”), an emendation followed by the NIV. There is no MS evidence for such a change, however.
