In the 20th century the revision of the Book of Common Prayer generally took place on historical grounds. In other words it has been considered axiomatic that our present day practice should be shaped by that of the early church. By ‘early church’ is not meant the apostolic church of the New Testament but the church of the first 500 years or so. Although this principle has been key for Anglican revisions of the service of Holy Communion
