Consider Jesus’ “exegesis” of God the Father (John 1:18), by way of contrast. One can study the life of Jesus from a number of angles, to be sure, but if one misses this one—his making God the Father known—one misses what is arguably the whole point. A similar point could be made with regard to the Gospels, which are theological “exegeses” of Jesus.
