But in another sense Paul emphasizes that salvation is here and now. The gospel is “the power of God for salvation” and God’s righteousness is being revealed in it (Rom 1:16–17). The tenor of the apostle’s writings and the manner of his living show that this is a reference to a present happening. Again, he quotes Isaiah 49:8, referring to God’s help in a day of salvation, and proceeds, “Look, now is the acceptable time; look, now is the day of salvation” (2 Cor 6:2). The doubled “now”
