The term “apostle” (apostolos) is used in the Gospels to designate the twelve disciples* called and sent out by Jesus to preach the Gospel (see Gospel [Good News]) of the kingdom (see Kingdom of God) and demonstrate its presence by performing signs and wonders (see Miracles). The term is not applied to Jesus himself in the Gospels, nevertheless there is good reason to believe that he thought of himself as the apostle of God*, sent into the world* to proclaim and inaugurate the kingdom of
