Young Men’s Christian Association. Nondenominational community service organization. Founded in London in 1844 by George Williams, the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) provided young men with a wholesome alternative to the evils of urban life. Meeting rooms with suitable reading materials, Bible classes and assistance in locating good lodging and Christian companions for fellowship and service were among its distinctives. Growing rapidly, it was transplanted to Montreal and Boston in 1851.
