Tennent, William (1673–1746). Presbyterian minister and educator. Tennent was probably born in Ireland, although inadequate records leave open the possibility that he was born in Scotland. He was trained at the University of Edinburgh, from which he received his M.A. (1693). Formally received by the general synod of Ulster in 1701, he married in 1702 and took orders in the Church of England in 1704.
